Adytum — from the Greek for the Inner Shrine, the Holy of Holies at the heart of the temple. It is the sacred centre within every one of us, and the work of building toward it is the work we share. Welcome. Whether you have studied the Western Mystery tradition for years or are feeling the first stirrings of a search you cannot quite name, you have found a place to begin.

Builders of the Adytum (B.O.T.A.) is a non-profit teaching order founded in 1922 by Dr. Paul Foster Case, and later carried forward and expanded internationally by his successor Ann Davies — whose work brought B.O.T.A. to Australia and New Zealand. Rooted in the tradition of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, B.O.T.A. offers a practical, structured path of spiritual unfoldment drawn from what we call the Ageless Wisdom.

Our Australian community is part of a worldwide fellowship spanning the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific — all studying the same lessons, working toward the same inner temple.

Our teachings are practical, experiential, and non-dogmatic. Through them, students explore:

• The Tarot — the great picture-book of the soul, and B.O.T.A.’s central meditative tool
• The Hermetic Qabalah — the Tree of Life as a map of consciousness and creation
• Astrology — the language of cosmic pattern and rhythm
• Esoteric psychology and meditation — the inner practices that turn knowledge into transformation

We hold that this Wisdom is “written by God upon the face of Nature” — unchanging, and belonging to no single creed. Seekers of every faith, and of none, are warmly welcome.

How the Work Unfolds

• Open Forum — public gatherings, in person and online, where newcomers can meet us, ask questions, and take their first steps in fellowship.
• Study by Correspondence — a graded series of weekly lessons studied in your own home, at your own pace, wherever you are in Australia.
• Group Ritual — for members who have entered Pronaos, our study groups bring the living imagery of the Tarot to life through shared ceremony.
